Technique: use of white paint

White paint is the most used paint of all colours. It is the painter's substitute for light. It is good to start with a base layer of bright white paint, even if you tone your canvas or wood panel a dark colour. As paint ages it grows transparent, what is underneath will show through over time. This white underlayer will keep your painting bright when this process occurs.

There are 3 basic forms: Lead white, Titanium white, Zinc white. Lead paint is poisonous, care must be taken during use, it also dries very fast and any paint mixed with it also dries faster, and is especially opaque. Titanium does not dry as faster but is still quite opaque. Zinc dries very slowly and is not as opaque. Zinc is good for if you are not able to finish the painting in one sitting.

White is the main colour that gives paint its thickness and body, it is also very durable.

Basic Painting Rules:

  • Let each previous layer dry completely. Wait at least 10 days.
  • Never dip a dry brush into the paint - wet it first then dry it a little with a paper towel.
  • Use different brushes for each colour.
  • Avoid touching the surface of the painting with bare hands - use bridge or mahlstick.
  • Have a plan and know what you are going to do.
